Franco's International Brigades - January 2013

Hurst & Co Team Up With New York's Columbia University to Publish New Edition

General Franco's International Brigades Book Cover A new edition of Christopher Othen's first book, 'Franco's International Brigades: Adventurers, Fascists, and Christian Crusaders in the Spanish Civil War' (amazon.co.uk or amazon.com), will be published in January 2013 in a joint venture between London-based Hurst & Co. and Columbia University of New York.

This ground breaking book, the first full account of the foreign volunteers and conscripts who fought for the right-wing Nationalist rebels in Spain during the 1930s, has been revised, updated, and expanded.

Originally published by Destino of Barcelona in 2007, 'Franco's International Brigades' received a limited edition English language release in 2009 and soon became a hard to find rarity. Now Hurst and Columbia are giving a wider audience the chance to discover it.

"Informed, highly readable and packed with fascinating details, 'Franco's International Brigades' is a key book for understanding the international dimensions of the Spanish Civil War - it wasn't all about romantic young men fighting for the Republic," said Jason Webster, author of '¡Guerra!: Living in the Shadows of the Spanish Civil War'. "Recommended both for newcomers to the subject and for those wishing to extend their knowledge of this most fascinating of periods in recent history."

The new edition adds 10,000 words of additional content, including the personal stories of Italian volunteers, an account of a notorious court case involving the White Russian community in Paris, details of the plot by two Frenchmen to wage biologicial warfare on Nationalist Spain, more on Eoin O'Duffy's Irish Brigade, the first account of Austrian and Filipino volunteers in Franco's forces, and the full story of the Norwegian Nazis who burgled Trotsky's home.

"This a highly readable, engaging work that plugs a major gap in the literature on the Spanish Civil War," said Dr Marko Hoare of Kingston University. "It sets the Nationalist cause in Spain in a wider context of conservative, Catholic and fascist currents in Europe and the world, explaining the importance of the conflict in the thinking and perception of members of such currents."

Check out the 'Franco's International Brigades: Adventurers, Fascists, and Christian Crusaders' on page 10 of the Hurst & Co. Summer/Autumn 2012 catalogue and at Columbia University Press.
